Bottled Water - Marketing Considerations

Before Launching Your Very Own Water Bottling Plant You Should Seriously Consider the Following Factors.........

Impact of Filtration on the Taste of the Product Water
Few people realise the difference in taste that filtration methods can cause and the end result for the product that you intend to market. For fruit juice manufacture and other liquids that have an inherent taste of their own the filtered water taste is not as "sharp" as that of plain water by itself.

Filtered water tends to be closer to normal tap water in texture and taste. Obviously, without the contaminants that have been removed, but still tends to be heavier and more acidic on the tongue. As you can understand, this is easily disguised in a juice or sweetened beverage.

Reverse Osmosis water on the other hand is immensely different in taste. It is light and soft, easily drinkable and non-filling making it ideal for use in still and sparkling water products.

However the cost diffrence in producing water via reverse osmosis is considerably higher than that of filtered and processed water. Each method is used according to the end result required and the current source water quality, not to mention the cost.

A Market for Your Product - Does it Exist
Have you done proper market research or is the bottled water simply a great idea at the spur of the moment ?
Does a market exist at all and who are they likely to be? Do they have the money to buy your product and is there sufficient profit in the product to make it successful ?

Are they young, middle aged or senior citizens. How are you going to reach them - newspaper adverts, TV, word of mouth, pamphlets or Sales Team. What will your distribution channel cost you per sale ?

Getting your Product To the Market
This aspect you are REALLY going to have to do your homework on particularly the transport costs. Bottled water is very heavy for its size and will have to be transported by road using economy cargo. R3.00 per kg is a standard cost for economy transport. Bearing in mind that 1 liter weighs 1 Kg (without packing) that is a substantial percentage of your total cost of each liter bottle ! How about bulk shipping in liquid form . Better still provide only to your local market where limited transport costs are to be generated.

Base Costs - What do they consist of
These consist of the initial cost of equipment amortised over 5 years, installation, yearly maintenance, water tests, bottles, labels, caps and production (filling). Add on costs will come in the form of packaging, flavourants, distribution and the sales channel.

How much of these products and services can you source at wholesale prices or are you fully reliant on a single service company. If you are linked to just one company - DO YOURSELF A BIG FAVOUR - find a backup company fast! So that you will always have continuity of service and never be held to ransom when your supplier changes their policy or pricing

What the Target Market is Drinking Now
For the target market that you have defined, what are they drinking now ? Is it similar or different and in what respects. Does the market want or have a place for another water product / juice / beverage? Can you offer something better or cheaper or more beneficial ? How much Public Awareness will have to be created to get your product purchased.

Your Competition - Who are they
Who are you up against and who do they service and how ? What is there market share and what sort of market penetration can you expect to achieve ? Do you have an advertising budget ?
